James Rouvelle,

James Rouvelle is an artist and professor
of interactive media at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore. He has an eclectic
background having received his bachelor of arts in music from Skidmore College
and master of fine arts from the Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard
College, while teaching himself electronics and computer programming. He
has also done graduate studies in composition at the Juilliard School of
Music and the Aspen Music Festival School. As a composer and performer in
classical music, Rouvelle directed a chamber music ensemble and, for 10
years, maintained an active performance schedule focusing on contemporary
music. Rouvelle has been a composer-in-residence, visiting artist, and lecturer
at numerous schools around the world. He has also exhibited his work locally
and internationally. Rouvelle has taught courses in music, interactive media,
electronics and programming at Connecticut College, University of Chicago,
Parsons School of Design in New York, and the Technisches Universitat (trans.
Technical University, or “TU”) in Berlin. Committed to the ideals
of collaboration and interdisciplinality, he is co-founder of the Urbantells
Collective and earlier this year was invited to give a presentation on the
concept and experience of time with Drs. Mario Livio and Dean Moyar of the
Hubble Space Observatory, and is presently working with the Maryland Science
Center on an upcoming exhibit entitled “the universe of the cell”.
